Before You Sign: A Notarization Reminder
One of the best ways to avoid delays during a notarization appointment is to wait for the notary’s instructions before signing your document.
Whether you need an acknowledgment, jurat, or another notarial act, the notary must follow the requirements that apply to the specific document and notarial certificate. Do not assume that signing beforehand is acceptable.
To Help Your Appointment Go Smoothly:
- Bring your documents as instructed and leave signature areas unsigned unless you have been told otherwise.
- Have a valid, government-issued photo ID ready.
- Wait for the notary to tell you when and where to sign.
- Ask questions before signing if you are unsure about the process.
If you have already signed a document, tell the notary before proceeding. Depending on the type of notarization and the document, the notary may be able to proceed or may need you to sign again in the appropriate manner.
A few minutes of preparation can help prevent unnecessary delays and make your appointment smooth, professional, and stress-free.
