On May 1, 2011, President Barack Obama announced the death of Osama bin Laden, leader of al-Qaeda, during a U.S. commando operation.
The operation, which took place in Abbottabad, Pakistan in the early morning hours of May 2 local time, marked the end of a nearly ten-year manhunt for the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks.
In announcing Bin Laden's death, President Obama declared "Justice has been done". The death of bin Laden was seen as a significant achievement in the fight against al-Qaeda and was met with widespread reactions, both positive and negative.

We created this illustration to explain the mechanics behind the American-made B-2 bunker-busting bomb, recently referenced in coverage of ongoing events in the Middle East.
Dropped from a B-2 stealth bomber flying at about 12 km altitude, the bomb accelerates purely from gravity—no engine required.
Guided by satellite and steered using movable tail fins, its immense weight creates intense kinetic energy on impact, driving the hardened casing up to 60 meters underground.
A delayed fuse then detonates 2,400 kg of explosives deep below the surface. / Source: BBC
