On May 1, 2011, President Barack Obama announced the death of Osama bin Laden, leader of al-Qaeda, during a U.S. commando operation. 
The operation, which took place in Abbottabad, Pakistan in the early morning hours of May 2 local time, marked the end of a nearly ten-year manhunt for the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks. 
In announcing Bin Laden's death, President Obama declared "Justice has been done". The death of bin Laden was seen as a significant achievement in the fight against al-Qaeda and was met with widespread reactions, both positive and negative.
