Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. moved to a run-down apartment at 1550 S. Hamlin Avenue (near 16th Street) in the Lawndale neighborhood on Chicago's West Side in January 1966.

He and his family lived there to spotlight terrible slum housing conditions, discriminatory real estate practices, and de facto segregation in northern cities.Key Details of Dr. King's West Side Campaign The Apartment: King deliberately chose a top-floor, rundown flat with faulty heating and plumbing to experience the harsh reality faced by Black tenants.

Local Engagement: He preached at Stone Temple Baptist Church, met with local youth and residents, and engaged with organizations like the Vice Lords to support nonviolent tenant rights.

The Chicago Freedom Movement: This local phase of the civil rights movement pushed for fair housing and open occupancy, culminating in marches into segregated white neighborhoods.

Would you like to know more about the Chicago Freedom Movement marches or the aftermath and impact of his time on the West Side?
