When You're Forced to Go Pro Se
Avoid "Groupie Lawyers"
My Experience Seeking Legal Representation
Last night, I sent my press release demand letter. In addition, I forwarded the same correspondence to the State Bar of Nevada in hopes of being matched with new legal counsel.
When you're preparing to file a federal case, seeking legal assistance can be part of the process. Depending on the court and the circumstances, you may request assistance with finding counsel. Keeping accurate documentation of the attorneys you've contacted, the responses you've received, and the efforts you've made to secure representation can also be important.
And trust me, I'm documenting EVERYTHING.
Everybody Has Something to Say Until It's Time to Do the Work!
Let me tell you something: this experience has been exhausting.
One particular attorney has become a source of frustration. I've repeatedly communicated my concerns and asked for the correspondence to stop. Yet somehow, the emails keep coming.
At this point, I'm asking myself why the communication continues when I've made it clear that I intend to proceed independently.
What's even more interesting is how quickly people seem willing to respond when they see Scottie Pippen's name included in an email.
Is it the case itself? Is it the name? Is it curiosity? Or is it simply the fact that certain names attract attention?
I can't speak to anyone else's motivations, but I can tell you what I've experienced.
If you're going to respond to my correspondence, please understand that I'm seeking professional assistance with a legal matter—not an ongoing email exchange that creates additional frustration.
I'm Not Afraid to Represent Myself
At this point, I'm preparing to move forward pro se, which means representing myself without an attorney.
Let me be clear: I understand that federal litigation is serious business. There are rules of civil procedure, filing deadlines, evidentiary requirements, and other obligations that must be followed. Representing yourself does not exempt you from those requirements.
But I also understand that I must take responsibility for my case, my documentation, and my decisions.
I'm keeping records of my efforts to obtain representation and the responses I've received. If the court permits or requires information concerning those efforts, I'll be prepared to provide accurate documentation.
I would have welcomed appropriate legal assistance. However, seeking representation should not become another source of unnecessary conflict.
I'm Thankful I'm Not Dependent on Anyone
One thing this experience has reinforced is the importance of independence.
I'm thankful that my entire future does not depend on whether a particular attorney chooses to work with me. I can continue researching, organizing my records, learning the applicable rules, and preparing my filings.
Would I prefer to have qualified legal counsel? Absolutely. Federal litigation is complex, and experienced legal representation can be valuable.
But I will not confuse my desire for representation with an obligation to continue pursuing a professional relationship that is no longer productive.
And to the attorneys who may be reading this: professionalism matters. Communication matters. Boundaries matter.
If you decline a case, communicate that decision clearly. If someone indicates that they no longer require your services, respect that decision and move accordingly.
Moving Forward
I'm not writing this because I expect everyone to agree with me. I'm writing because this is part of my experience navigating the legal system while attempting to secure representation.
My focus is on preparing my case, maintaining documentation, and following the applicable federal court procedures.
I'm not interested in unnecessary distractions. I'm interested in moving forward.
The bottom line? I'm seeking justice, not celebrity attention. I'm seeking appropriate legal assistance, not endless correspondence. And if I must proceed pro se, then I'll do my best to prepare responsibly and let the legal process take its course.
To those who have offered genuine assistance, information, and professional courtesy, thank you.
As for the rest, I'll keep my documentation organized and my attention where it belongs: on my case.
